Description

Initially, Dutasteride (Avodart) was used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. However, after showing promising results for the treatment of male pattern baldness, it is now routinely prescribed for this condition as well. Dutasteride (Avodart) is therefore an effective drug used to treat male pattern baldness.

As Dutasteride (Avodart) is only licensed for use for the treatment of BPH, our doctors prescribe this medication for 'off-label' use. 'Off-label' means the medicine is being used in a way that is different to how it's described in the medical licence of the product. We would recommend that the licensed product Finasteride (Propecia) is tried first before using an off-label medication such as Dutasteride for hair loss.

Avodart is the branded version of Dutasteride. As GSK (the manufacturers of Avodart) have lost their patent, other companies are now able to produce generic versions of this drug and sell them at a lower price. This is the reason why Avodart is more expensive than Dutasteride. There is clinically no difference between Avodart and Dutasteride; they both contain the same active ingredient.

Dutasteride (Avodart) is similar to Finasteride (Propecia); both dutasteride and finasteride work in a similar way, but some studies have shown that Dutasteride (Avodart) may be more effective in preventing hair loss.

Warnings

Warnings and precautions when taking generic dutasteride (Avodart):

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may cause harm to an unborn baby if handled by a pregnant woman. It should not be handled by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Dutasteride is not indicated for use in women.
  • Prostate cancer: Dutasteride reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer, but may also mask the early detection of prostate cancer. Regular prostate exams are recommended while taking dutasteride.
  • Liver function: Dutasteride may affect liver function, so regular monitoring of liver enzymes may be necessary.
  • Sexual side effects: Dutasteride may cause sexual side effects such as impotence (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection), decreased libido (reduced interest in sexual activity), and decreased semen volume. These effects may continue even after stopping the medication.
  • Inform your healthcare provider: Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, as they may interact with dutasteride.
  • Allergic reactions: Seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Directions for Taking Generic Dutasteride (Avodart) for Hair Loss:

  • The recommended dose of generic Dutasteride (Avodart) for hair loss is one 0.5mg capsule daily.
  • You can take the capsule with or without food at any time of the day.
  • For optimal results, it is advisable to take the capsule at approximately the same time every day.
  • If you forget to take a capsule, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
  • In case of accidentally taking too many capsules, consult your doctor or healthcare provider.
  • Hair growth improvements are typically noticeable within 3 to 6 months of starting daily dosage, with more significant results observed after 12 months and beyond.

Ingredients

Each capsule of generic dutasteride (Avodart) contains 0.5 mg of dutasteride. The capsule may include inactive ingredients such as mono-di-glycerides of caprylic/capric acid and butylated hydroxytoluene, along with gelatin (from certified BSE-free bovine sources), glycerin, and ferric oxide (yellow) in the capsule shell.
